The Golden Eggplant
At the heart of Kreta Ayer Community Garden stands the Golden Eggplant, a bright and symbolic crop chosen to represent abundance, resilience, and the living spirit of Chinatown. Its golden fruits remind us of prosperity, harvest, and new beginnings. In our garden, the eggplant is more than a vegetable. It is a story of patience, care, and community hands coming together to nurture life from soil.

For this year’s edible garden competition, we titled our entry “Golden Eggplant: Spirits of Chinatown.” The plant celebrates the energy of Kreta Ayer, where heritage, food, markets, flowers, residents, and community life come together in one vibrant neighbourhood. The eggplant’s strong stems, broad leaves, and golden fruits reflect the character of Chinatown itself: rooted in tradition, yet always growing, adapting, and blooming with life.

Kreta Ayer Community Garden

Located on the rooftop of Chinatown Complex, the Kreta Ayer Community Garden is a collaborative initiative between the People’s Association (PA) and Corridor Farmers, bringing residents together to grow, learn, and connect through urban gardening.
This year’s Edible Garden Competition marks the first time our community gardeners have participated together as one team. Through caring for the Golden Eggplant, preparing the display, and sharing ideas, neighbours have built new friendships while celebrating the spirit of Chinatown. The garden also faces unique challenges. Its rooftop location has no lift access, making maintenance physically demanding, while Chinatown’s ageing population highlights the need to engage younger generations and activate the space through meaningful community programmes.

Our vision is to transform the rooftop into a living circular food ecosystem. By connecting the wet market, hawker centre, community garden, and composting, we hope to demonstrate how food waste can become compost, compost can grow fresh produce, and the harvest can eventually complement Chinatown’s food culture.

More than a garden, we envision this space as a destination where seniors, residents, volunteers, students, and tourists come together to experience urban farming, sustainability, and the rich heritage of Chinatown.

Together, we are a farm, a fam in every corner.
